Who We Are
Misalliance Repertory Theatre is a group of artists collaborating to bring you the works of George Bernard Shaw and similar playwrights: hilarious and provocative plays rooted in social commentary. By presenting a repertoire of classical and contemporary plays, we hope to start a conversation between past and present, providing a way for all of us to better understand the world we live in today. We honor the work of these great writers through an exploration of text, educational outreach, and performances of the highest quality. Our tools are scripts, music stands, and the skills of classically trained actors.
Our History
Misalliance Repertory Theatre was formed as the offspring of ShawChicago Theatre Company. The brainchild of Lois Weisberg, Chicago’s first Commissioner of Cultural Affairs, ShawChicago was formed to provide the people of Chicago with quality readings of the works of Shaw and his contemporaries. When renowned classical actor, director, and teacher Robert Scogin was brought on as artistic director, ShawChicago became a cultural treasure, delighting audiences for 25 years. During his tenure, Scogin created an ensemble of classical actors uniquely equipped to present these complex and challenging works. Following Scogin’s death in 2018 and the ShawChicago board’s decision to dissolve the company, the ensemble formed Misalliance Repertory Theatre.
